Inspired Kinetics

The Akule’s Ball was a commission by the Howard Hughes Development Corp. for their South Shore Market in Honolulu. Inspired by the vast schools of fish I’ve encountered during my ocean swims around Oahu, this kinetic sculpture embodies the fluidity and grace of marine life. Leveraging two of my own inventions, the fish decals employ an iridescent film I developed for stunning color effects, while the structure utilizes a matrix design to convey 3D and motion effects from 2D imagery.

Marine Muses

The Akule’s Ball was born from the depths of my experiences encountering vast schools of fish during my ocean swims around Oahu. These mesmerizing gatherings of marine life, with their graceful movements and majestic presence, have always held a profound fascination for me. The way they move together in perfect harmony, shimmering and gliding through the water with effortless grace, is truly awe-inspiring.

These encounters with ocean life, coupled with the play of light and color dancing beneath the surface, have been a constant wellspring of inspiration for my artistic endeavors. The iridescent film I developed captures the essence of these underwater spectacles, producing stunning color effects that mimic the ever-changing hues of the ocean.

In crafting the Akule’s Ball, I sought to encapsulate the beauty and dynamism of these underwater scenes. The sculpture utilizes innovative techniques, including my patented matrix design, to convey a sense of three-dimensionality and motion from two-dimensional imagery. Through this creation, I aim to evoke the wonder and magic of the ocean, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the enchanting world beneath the waves.
