My Role
- Architect
Box Jelly is a co-working office space designed with a casual yet surprising blend of design elements that encourage interaction and productivity. The space was previously a Brew Pub and nightclub which posed some interesting opportunities and challenges. Rae Douglass started the project by providing a building assesment and program based on the client’s needs, budget and plans for expansion. From this he developed a conceptual plan chosen from design options presented to the client for consideration. The conceptual options were rendederd by hand to emphasize its global nature and encourage the incorporation of new ideas as they arose. Rae Douglass believes that no idea should prevent the incorporation of a better one, and it is much more economical to change your mind in the conceptual phase as it is during construction.

The design was inspired by the city and its place in the natural landscape. The program consisted of both enclosed and open plan office spaces. The open plan office spaces are inspired by the outdoor natural landscape, and flow around the enclosed spaces inspired by the city in that landscape. The building analysis revealesd that certain portions of the existing space could be altered to enhance his concept and provide a more natural flow to the plan without expensive work.
